Using a Master Tow Dolly

Front wheel drive vehicles are the easiest to tow as the drive wheels (front) are on the dolly and the rear wheels are simply free wheeling.

Towing a rear wheel drive vehicle will require either (1) removing the drive shaft or (2) towing the vehicle with the rear wheels on the dolly (backward). When towing a vehicle backward, the steering wheel must be secured in a position where the front tires are straight. If the front wheels are not straight the vehicle will wander around as it is being pulled.  A rear wheel drive with a standard transmission can be towed by leaving the transmission in neutral.  Some 4-wheel drive vehicles have a transfer case that can be disengaged that will allow them to be pulled with their front wheels on the dolly. It is always a good idea to check with your Dealership as to the suitability of using a tow dolly with your particular vehicle as they have the best information.

Towing small and medium size vehicles is not a problem. Most full size cars and pickups will also fit. Many SUVs are fine, but there are limits. A width measurement from outside of front tire to outside of front tire is the most accurate way to determine if size is a problem. Extremely large tires may pose a problem as well. The weight of the vehicle being towed is seldom a problem for all but the largest of vehicles.

MASTER TOW dollies are available with electric brakes, surge brakes or no brakes at all. Electric brakes and surge brakes are both effective braking systems. With electric brakes you will need a brake controller in the vehicle that is pulling . Hydraulic surge brakes are activated as the pulling vehicle slows. The more abruptly the pulling vehicle slows, the harder the brakes apply. All of the braking mechanism is contained on the dolly with the surge brake system. Of course a tow dolly with no brakes is self explanatory. The decision about brakes or no brakes should be made with consideration to type and size of pulling vehicle, size and weight of towed vehicle, terrain & conditions being operated in, applicable laws and safety in general.

Tow dollies are a safe, flexible, and economical way to transport a vehicle. These are some general considerations, if you have any questions please visit our FAQ page on this website or call  603-329-5975 or e-mail 24/7: MasterTow@comcast.net My name is Ian.
